SHELTER HOURS

Monday thru Saturday 1-6 p.m
Closed Sunday

The Humane Society of Jefferson County,Inc. is a non-profit entity serving municipalities that contract on a yearly basis. We offer 24 hour stray animal pick-up 365 days of the year to contracting municipalities.

ADOPTION PROCEDURE

1. We verify home ownership or get approval from the landlord. We do this because one of the top 10 reasons unwanted animals are surrendered is "landlord does not allow pets".

2. We also check on a working relationship with a veterinarian for any currently or previously owned pets. This shows us your intent to provide any needed medical attention for the new pet and that you will comply with state and local ordinances.

3. We do not adopt to anyone under 18 years of age.

4. The application process takes approximately 24-48 hours.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Humane Society of Jefferson County is to provide for the lost, homeless, neglected and abused animals of Jefferson County.

OPERATION OF THE SHELTER

The policy making body of the shelter is the Board of Directors. An Executive Director heads the staff. The staff includes approximately nine part and full-time employees.

GEOGRAPHICAL AREA SERVED

Jefferson County is the primary area served by HSJC. The humane society contracts with the municipalities separately. Each year these contracts must be renewed. The humane society provides these municipalities with 24 hours, 365 days a year animal control for domestic animals.

FUNDING

The HSJC is a private non-profit organization. The shelter is funded entirely by its contracts with the municipalities, adoption fees, memberships, and private donations.

HOLDING PERIODS

State law mandates that stray dogs and cats be held for seven days to allow for the possible redemption by the owner. Stray animals are listed in local newspapers. After these steps have been taken, the animal may be put up for adoption.

EUTHANASIA

One of the most difficult aspects of shelter work is the necessity of euthanasia. HSJC does not have a time limit on its animals. Euthanasia decisions are based on the health and temperament of the animal.
